After the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in 2020, there are a limited number of doctors left in the country who provide third-trimester abortions for women. AFTER TILLER moves between the rapidly unfolding stories of these doctors, all of whom were close colleagues of Dr. Tiller, and are fighting to keep this service available in the wake of his death. These four people have become the new number-one targets of the pro-life movement, yet continue to risk their lives every day to do work that many believe is murder, but which they believe is profoundly important for their patients' lives. AFTER TILLER shows them confronting harassment from protesters, challenges in their personal lives, and a series of tough ethical decisions.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a controversial bill — called by some a religious-freedom bill and others an anti-gay bill. How much do you know about SB 2020? Here are 5 things:
1. First introduced Jan. 14, and passed by the state Senate 17-13 on Feb. 19, it passed the state House 33-27 on Feb. 20.
Continue Reading2. It would have changed part of an existing Arizona state law regarding free exercise of religion to broaden protections to nongovernmental entities. The bill would have changed the definition of "person” from referring just to a religious institution to include "any individual, association, partnership, corporation, church, religious assembly or institution or other business organization.” It also would have added language that says individuals may use burdens on their religious exercise as a defense in judicial actions even if the government is not a part of the case. This essentially means businesses have a right to claim a religious objection to providing services to customers.
3. It set out requirements for what people claiming their religious beliefs are burdened must prove. "1. That the person’s action or refusal to act is motivated by a religious belief. 2. That the person’s religious belief is sincerely held. 3. That the state action substantially burdens the exercise of the person’s religious beliefs.”
4. It gained some high-profile detractors, including major corporations. Companies including Apple, AT&T and American Airlines had called on Brewer to veto the bill. Even the NFL was pulled into the controversy over the bill. With Arizona set to host the 2020 Super Bowl, the NFL had said it was keeping an eye on what happens in Arizona.
5. Prominent national Republicans pushed against SB 2020. Both of Arizona’s Republican senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, came out in favor of a veto, and so did former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

"Governor Brewer's interest is about imposing her values limited to her religious beliefs rather than serving all the people of Arizona," says Kat Sabine, the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona. "While Arizonans had been facing the most difficult financial disaster in our lifetimes, Governor Brewer had focused her attention on promoting childbirth in schools, helping to fund crisis pregnancy centers -- which are religiously funded organizations that do not serve the needs, honestly, for all women -- and she signed religious protection from contraception coverage, which was used as a foundation argument in the ill-decided Hobby Lobby case at the Supreme Court."
